It is with great sadness we announce the death of Melvyn Scott, founder of Scott & Sons.
Nearly 40 years ago, Mel sat at the helm of our company, steering the business from its small beginnings to watching it become one of the most reputable and successful cleaning companies in the region. It is a testament to Mel’s entrepreneurial spirit that Scott & Sons is what it is today.
Of course, none of this was inevitable and like most things in life, setting up a business involved a degree of risk and a large dose of self-belief. Luckily, Mel had this in spades. He started his career as a window cleaner. Never shy of hard work, he put in the hours and became a regional manager elsewhere. Seeing a gap in the market for a more personal approach to cleaning, Mel decided to go it alone.
He understood that a fledgling company with excellent products and services could still flounder without a proper business plan and contingency measures. Never one to cut corners, Mel made sure Scott & Sons had a solid foundation to build upon – something the company still draws on today.
Anyone setting up a business from scratch will tell you it can be hugely challenging, but with the support of his wife, who used her excellent organisational skills as a PA to run the administrative side of the business, the company went from strength to strength.
As the business expanded, the need for additional area managers, full-time cleaners and subcontractors has seen Scott & Sons ascend new heights. Today, we are hugely proud of the range of services we offer and our commitment to quality cleaning –  all hallmarks of Mel’s vision.
Scott & Sons is, of course, a family affair, and for the last 20 years has been run by Mel’s son Guy and his wife Joanne. Together with their daughter Rosie, they are keeping Mel’s legacy alive and driving the business forward with plenty of hope and optimism for the future.
If there is any proof needed of what can be achieved with a good idea and clear vision – then Mel Scott is it. As a family, we celebrate his life not only as a man of ambition but more importantly, as a beloved husband, father and grandfather.
Mel’s funeral will be taking place this Friday. If you have any personal dealings with Mel and would like to get in touch, please do.
